Michigan Publishing is a member of CrossRef, which allows us to create Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for our publications. A DOI is a stable identifier assigned to a work that redirects viewers to the URL of the definitive version of that work online. Members of CrossRef register and include a DOI for each work that they publish. In addition, members are required to link to each other's works using DOIs.
(For more background information on DOIs and Michigan Publishing's participation with CrossRef, please visit Publishing Partner Guide to DOIs.)
So, if your journal is using DOIs and you are preparing your own PDFs, you will need to include DOIs in the Word and PDF files you supply us with. Prepare Word documents and PDF files as you have been except:
1. Insert DOIs either on the first page of each article or as a running header or footer. Each article will have its own unique DOI. Use the following scheme to construct the DOI:
http://dx.doi.org/10.3998/jjjj.XXXXXXXX.000V.IAA (XXXXXXXX = unique 8-digit ID provided by Michigan Publishing, jjjj = journal acronym V = volume #, I = issue #, AA = two digit article #)
For example, the DOI for the 4th article in Volume 1, Issue 1 of Gender, Sexuality, and Feminism (gsf) would be:
http://dx.doi.org/10.3998/gsf.12220332.0001.104
2. Insert outbound DOI links in footnotes, endnotes, and bibliograpy for both the Word file and the PDF you provide us with.
To simplify this process, you can:
a) Go to http://www.crossref.org/SimpleTextQuery/ and register an e-mail address with CrossRef's service.
b) Once registered, on the same page, you can copy/paste all references, submit, and CrossRef will return the submitted references with a DOI for each reference, if it exists.
c) Paste these references, now with DOIs included, back into your Word document.
The process has been designed to be relatively painless, but please contact us if you have any questions.
