Michigan Publishing creates and hosts a variety of digital resources. Depending on the nature and goals of a given project, several different approaches to preservation might apply. Policies and practices in use at Michigan Publishing are outlined below:

Michigan Journals, DigitalCultureBooks, and other sites and projects hosted on the DLXS platform

These permanent scholarly publications are treated as part of the University of Michigan Library's digital collections and are subject to the following approach to preservation:

  • Content is stored on networked storage operated by University of Michigan Central IT in campus data centers (somewhat like a private cloud for the campus community). The service provides the library with a single active instance of the content on spinning disk and a nightly replica of the content to an alternate campus datacenter for disaster recovery purposes only. More details about the service are available publicly at (http://www.itcs.umich.edu/storage/value), including the SLA for the service (http://www.itcs.umich.edu/storage/value/sla.php).
  • The University of Michigan Library operates web services against the content from two different data centers. Our primary data center is a tier 2+ facility off campus with 2+1 redundant generator power. Our secondary data center is a tier 1+ dedicated server room in the library and uses the more reliable campus power generation rather than commercial utility.
  • Our load-balancing is active-active, meaning both sites are in operation, and if one goes down, the other keeps serving content.
