Before Implementation

1. Publishing Partner evaluates the pros, cons, and obligations of developing and sustaining a viable online discussion space. As you consider, you might check out the following resources (provided by DISQUS):
   1. Online Comment Moderation: Emerging Best Practices (2013 report by the World Editors forum)
   2. 5 Steps to a More Active Community (DISQUS blog post)
2. Publishing partner indicates they would like to add the DISQUS commenting feature.
3. Michigan Publishing adds and tests the feature in the developmental space.
4. Publishing partner previews feature.
5. Potential moderators create DISQUS accounts at http://disqus.com/. (Note: You don't need to register any site information. We've already done this, so just sign up for an account.)
6. Publishing partner sends a list of moderator usernames/emails to Michigan Publishing.
7. Michigan Publishing adds moderator(s) to account.
8. Publishing partner moderators review moderation guidelines below and explores DISQUS features.
9. Michigan Publishing adds the feature.
10. Publishing partner follows the instructions in the "To Receive Email Notifications" below to set up notifications.
11. Publishing partner then takes over responsibility for maintaining account and moderating comments.

To Add a Moderator

1. Any potential moderators must first set up a username/password with DISQUS.
2. Primary moderators can add others to the moderator list, giving them access to the administrative settings, by doing the following:
   1. Click on Admin at the top of the page, once signed in
   2. Under "Moderation Settings", click "Add/remove moderators"
   3. Click the "add a moderator" button and enter the username or password of the person you'd like to add
   4. Save Changes

To Remove a Moderator

1. Click on Admin at the top of the page, once signed in
2. Under "Moderation Settings", click "Add/remove moderators"
3. Click on the 'Remove' button next to the moderator you'd like to delete.
4. Save Changes

Recommended Moderation Settings

Michigan Publishing strongly recommends that you pre-moderate ALL comments, so only valid comments appear on your site.

1. Go to Admin -> Settings tab
2. Under "Community Rules" be sure the circle next to "All — Moderators must approve all comments. " is checked.
3. Save Changes

Note: Michigan Publishing will make the above moderation selections upon implementation.

To Receive Email Notifications:

1. Sign into DISQUS
2. You'll see a dropdown menu next to your username in the upper right corner
3. Select "Edit Profile" from the dropdown menu
4. Click on the Notifications Tab
5. Make sure "Send me notifications." is checked.
6. Scroll to the bottom to Site Settings:
   1. Check the boxes next to the type of email notifications you'd like to receive. Michigan Publishing recommends that you receive notifications for ALL comments.
   2. Check the box next to your site's name (at the bottom) to enable notifications
7. Save Changes

OPTIONAL: You may choose to receive Disqus Digests and adjust your Personal Settings from this menu as well.

Moderating Via Email

You can moderate through email by replying to the commenting notification. Respond in the body with "Delete", "Approve", or "Spam". Respond with anything else to approve the comment and post your message as a reply comment.

Tip: Email auto-responders may automatically approve comments and create reply comments. It's best to temporarily disable email notifications for moderators using auto-responders to prevent unwanted comments from appearing.

Controlling Commenters & Spammers

• DISQUS will alert you to commenters with a low reputation by adding a 'Low Rep' indicator below the commenters name.
• To see what types of other comments a user has been posting, click on the his/her name. Comments they've added on other sites will display in a box on the right.
• Add valid commenters to the whitelist. Add spammers and other invalid commenters to the blacklist. (Whitelist/Blacklist Help: http://docs.disqus.com/help/55/)

Note on Comment Preservation/Migration

• DISQUS is a 3rd party platform used by Michigan Publishing. Therefore, at this time, Michigan Publishing cannot guarantee long-term comment preservation or migration of comments to other systems.
