What is the Rapid Typesetting service?

Although Michigan Publishing focuses on creating and hosting XML-encoded versions of publications for our partners, readers still benefit from the ability to print copies of articles that they'd like to engage with deeply. While they can certainly print a copy of the web version of an article, a version typeset for print is more attractive and easier to use once printed.

Some of our publishing partners already create a typeset version of their publications. Others, however, lack the resources or expertise to do so. To help fulfill that need, Michigan Publishing offers the Rapid Typesetting service to our partners at a small additional cost.

Rapid Typesetting offers:

• The ability to represent complicated layouts in print format (including justification, fonts, spacing, image placement, tables, endnotes, and footnotes.)

• One XML-driven process for the entire publication, making publishing workflows simpler and saving time and cost.

• A single point of contact (Michigan Publishing) for both online and print-ready versions.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How is pricing structured?

Michigan Publishing charges a one-time setup fee for each new typeset journal, plus per-item fees. See below or your contact at Michigan Publishing for more information.

2. Does Michigan Publishing offer volume discounts for large projects?

No, not at this time.

3. What is the turnaround time?

Normally, the typeset PDFs will be released a few weeks after the Michigan Publishing online version of the publication. We can also coordinate release of the online and PDF versions if desired.

4. Is there a fee per endnote, as with footnotes?

No, the fee applies only to footnotes, which are more difficult to typeset than endnotes.

5. Is the setup fee charged for each issue of a journal? What about monographs?

No, the setup fee is only charged once per journal title. Please contact us to discuss monograph publications.

6. Where can I see examples?

Pricing Structure (subject to change)

One-time template/style setup fee: $275

$4.50 per page

$2 per image

$2 per alteration

$8 per index page

$20 per set of print proofs (no charge for PDF proofs)

$35/hr for footnotes, table composition and two-column or other special layouts

NOTE: As of June 2014, the $1 per footnote charge has been replaced by the hourly charge above, which is generally lesser.
